The TALKING DRUM “GANGAN” Is Not An Acoustic Instrument!

I’ve heard so much arguments between sound engineers and talking drummers, mostly when the drummer says I need more treble and bass; for those engineers that understand the talking drums, they even set up a pre-amp to pump up the volume, the depth and the bites. For other engineers they come up with the acoustic theory that talking drum should sound the way it sounds without miking. NO SIR. THE TALKING DRUM IS AN ELECTRIC INSTRUMENT! Just like the electric guitar, not like the drums you mike. It enjoys a larger than life effect just like the electric guitar.

Generally, electric instruments depend on amplification for sound (not to be confused with electronic instruments) e.g electric guitar and bass. An acoustic instrument is the one that can be played with or without amplification e.g grand piano, acoustic drums and guitars.
The talking drum also known as “GANGAN” which is found in Yoruba Pop music is never used for performance without amplification, but there is a type of talking drum “IYA ILU” which is acoustic in nature, loud and broad sound, often found at carnivals and festivals, but not in Pop. Another important feature that differentiates both drums is that Gangan is held under the armpit whereby Iya Ilu is held by the waist.
The only difficulty in equing talking drum is in masking the bass and kick, but the main consideration is this; what is the importance of talking drum to the music? If it’s Fuji, Juju or Tungba, it has to take the base while others give way.
So, next time you meet a talking drummer, have an understanding with him, and do not forget that V SHAPE EQ SETTING. It’s his drum! Or is it your drum?

    1. Depends on the style of music, if Alujo, Juju or Fuji, kick and talking drum should be prominent, for other styles, TD should be behind. About EQ, always make sure that if your kick has depth the bass should not and vise verse. Depending on the style, if TD should have depth the kick should only have punch. For a fast music, it’s better your kick doesn’t have too much depth. Deep bass sounds better on R n B and other slower genres
